OFFBEAT HIP VINEYARD WEDDING: ATHENA & JONNY, PART II

Welcome to Part II of Athena & Jonny’s wedding – in case you missed it, we blogged Part I of Athena & Jonny’s wedding yesterday (and you really don’t want to have missed it – so much sweetness & light! And the story of how they met is just too cute!).

Today we continue with Athena & Jonny’s reception, which is packed full of delightful details that we absolutely adore. Take, for instance, their escort cards stuck into garden planter boxes! We also love the playful modern calligraphy on them.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a family-style dinner that was like an upscale version of an outdoor barbecue with locally sourced ingredients.  The mouth-watering menu included angus tri-tip, blackened catfish, caprese salad with burrata and candied garlic and good ol’ fashioned California Mac n’ cheese.

With the help of some friends, Athena and Jonny built their very own “Kissing Booth.” Guests posed with mustaches and eyeglasses props behind it and – quite appropriately – kissed for the cameras too!

Much of the wedding’s design was DIY, including the vinyl record backdrop that Athena and Jonny hung behind the DJ booth.

Athena and Jonny chose two flavors for their cakes: strawberry shortcake for the wedding cake and red velvet for the groom’s cake.  The groom’s cake was made in the likeness of Jonny’s old racecar – the resemblance and detail were so uncanny and true to life that Jonny was reluctant to eat it!

Athena & Jonny also made the string of daisies as a backdrop to their dessert table, and their wedding planners from So Happi Together further designed their dessert table, complete with hard candies, lollipops and salt-water caramels.

After a filling down-home meal, guests watched as Athena and Jonny turn a turn on the dance floor to The Luckiest by Ben Folds Five – a song that Jonny had first heard over a decade earlier when they first started dating and which, even then, he knew would one day be their song.

We love how Athena chose to throw “faux” bouquets for her bouquet toss! If you did this, then you could save your real bouquet, either by drying it out and encasing it in a shadow box or frame, or press petals into a scrapbook.

Here are some sage words from the bride herself: “Of course it is important to have a beautiful wedding,” remarks Athena, “but more important to us was to have a personal wedding.  We let that guide all our decisions. And we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.”

Big, huge thanks to Athena & Jonny for writing such a heartwarming story about their wedding day to us and of course to the fabulous photographers Jesse & Whitney Chamberlin of Our Labor of Love for sending us their gorgeous work!

Hasn’t this wedding just put you into a celebratory spirit? Well, wait until you see this video of their reception and dance-off from the awesome Brian Morrow of SharkPig!
